First book in new series written in the form of a letter to children helps teach basic knowledge of Type 1 Diabetes; demonstrates how a little imagination can help make less than desirable circumstances a whole lot more tolerable
“I was
diagnosed with Type I Diabetes last year. It was very scary and I didn’t
understand what the doctors and nurses were saying. When we went home
from the hospital, everything was different…I wasn’t happy at all. I
hated getting my finger poked to test my blood sugar and getting insulin
shots all the time. I was angry because I felt different and sad because
I just wanted to be a normal kid. My mom tried to help me feel better.
She told me to use my imagination to make having diabetes more fun.” ~ Excerpt from Danny, the
Diabetes Dynamo
So begins the tale of Danny, the Diabetes Dynamo, about a little boy who is diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, how his world changes, and how he learns to cope. The creation of Michelle A. Dart, a pediatric nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator and parent of a child with diabetes, Dynamo Danny goes on to explain all about insulin, high and low blood sugars, why he needs to eat healthy foods, and how he used his mom’s idea to make having diabetes more fun.
At first this isn’t easy, because having diabetes is actually a lot of work. As Danny explains, you can’t just go out and play anymore without thinking about it. You can’t just eat whatever you want without thinking about whether or not you’re eating the right foods. You can’t even go to bed at night without checking your blood sugar!
Written in the form of a letter to other children who have diabetes, Danny the Diabetes Dynamo takes the confusion out of the diagnosis and makes it clear that kids with diabetes are just that – kids. Danny’s invitation at the end of the book to join his mission to fight diabetes and be a Diabetes Dynamo too will appeal to children everywhere. As Danny says, “Use your imagination…You can be anything you want to be!”
Dart comments, “The beginning of a series of books, Danny will grow with the child and help prepare them for a lifetime of self-management skills. In this first book, Danny invites children to write him and share their stories. Those children’s names will appear in the next Danny book and will inspire Danny’s future.”
Dart is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Danny, the Diabetes Dynamo to the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help fund research and provide resources for children and families with diabetes.
